Blood Testing

What is a blood test?

Blood tests are used to measure or look at cells, chemicals, proteins, or other substances in your blood. Blood testing, also known as blood work, is one of the most common types of lab tests. A blood test is often done to check your health, as part of a regular check-up or to find out why you're having certain symptoms. It involves having a small amount of your blood taken for testing.

We offer a comprehensive range of blood tests to meet your health needs. Our blood testing services include well-man/well-woman checks, anaemia screening, allergy testing, and more.

We can test for over 2000 elements in your blood and therefore have a wider array of tests compared to standard GP blood testing. If you have specific tests you want carried out that are not within our standard packages, please ask us.

These tests are designed to provide you with detailed insights into your health, helping you to manage and address any concerns promptly. Whether you need routine screening or specific diagnostic tests, our experienced team is here to ensure you receive accurate and timely results.

When would I need a blood test?

There are lots of reasons why you may need a blood test. A blood test may be done to:

  • Help diagnose certain diseases and conditions

  • Routine check-up

  • Trucheck early detection cancer screening

  • Find out if the symptoms you're having are caused by certain conditions

  • Find out if treatment is working as it should be

  • Find out how well a condition is being treated or managed

  • Check organ functionality (kidneys, liver, heart, thyroid)

How to get a blood test

Booking a blood test is a straightforward process. If you know the specific test you need, you can book online. Alternatively, you can schedule an appointment over the phone by calling us on 0800 688 9992 to book an initial consultation.

Preparing for a blood test

The doctor, nurse, or specialist should tell you if you need to do anything to prepare for a blood test. For example, for a short time before some tests, you may be asked not to eat or drink anything other than water.

What to expect

A soft strap (tourniquet) may be put around your arm first. This helps to make taking blood easier. You’ll feel a scratch as the needle goes in, which may be a bit uncomfortable. Your blood will be collected in a small tube, which will be sent to a lab for testing. After the test, you'll usually be given some cotton wool or plaster to cover the area where the blood was taken. You may get some bruising or swelling around the area where your blood was taken, but this should go away after a few days.

If you're worried about needles, don’t hesitate to talk to the healthcare professional doing your blood test. They can help you feel more comfortable during the test.
